The job might sound funny because everyone knows how to handle their social media accounts, right? Wrong.

Companies do not know how to handle their social media accounts. This is why they hire other companies to do just that. Stars do not know how to manage their social media accounts. This is why they can come out and lie that they did not tweet that and everyone would believe them. Again, anytime they are allowed to near their social media account, you can be sure that a scandal level event will happen within the given period they were allowed to handle it. Politicians do not know how to handle their social media accounts. This is why some can deny thing, just as the stars and others will not near a political office again even if they were begged.

It does not stop there.

He or she knows what and how to respond to that thing in such a way that every follower will assume that it is the actual account holder that said or did it (unless they come out to deny it and everyone will naturally believe that they should take no responsibility for owning an account that was used y someone else). The social media manager works hand in hand with other members of the account holder’s team to create an online persona that is sustainable and consistent with the image of the said account holder. They can do a reset anytime they want after they must have done a strategy meeting.

The social media manager has their hands on all the social accounts and is actually managing the online reputation of the account holder (as for the account holder, he, she or it may not necessary know the password to that account). He or she is in constant touch with the relevant team members of the account holder so that they can respond quickly to situations.

As you can see, you must be educated. It is not just about being techy or geeky. You need to have gone through some level of schooling on image making, PR, understanding the social dynamics of the phenomenon known as the internet and you can add sociology as well as human psychology. Seriously (actually, I was serious the first time), you need to need a minimum college degree level education with a BA or BSC in relevant blah blah.

Experience

Your experience may come in handy. If you are going for an interview for the position of Social Media Manager and your CV say you managed Madonna’s account, the job is yours. You need experience. You also need on ground training so you might just do if you have worked in a company’s internet or social media related department. If you have worked in a reputation management company, the job might also go to you.

Skill Set

  • Must be able to listen and carry out instructions
  • Must be able to ask relevant questions that gently exposes are social media move to be a mistake in the making
  • Should be able to proffer workable social media solutions and still look on with aplomb when it is shot down

  • Should be able to presents charts, power point presentations and talk slowly using kindergarten level English to communicate Social Media Marketing strategies to top Business Executives of Conglomerates.
  • Must know how to use Twitter, emails and send SMS texts.

Pay

The pay is good if you are working for a star, they are considerate because of the extra baggage. The pay is poor when you are working for a politician. In both cases the risk of being the Fall Guy is pretty high. It is worse in both cases if you are an intern.

You could get a pay that is commensurate with that of your peers (education wise) if you get a job with an IBM-like firm. You could receive better pay (the best really) if you work in a specialist firm i.e. a firm specializing in online social media and reputation management.
