Many adults are still susceptible to ear infection even though children are the greatest victims. Ear infection in children is minor and it clears away easily, but ear infection in adults is more severe and it can be a sign of underlying health problems.

Ear infections are mainly caused by bacteria. Viruses can also cause it, the ear becomes infected when either a bacteria or virus enters the ears. This is a painful condition that causes inflammation and fluid retention in the middle ear.

It also affects hearing till the infection is cured. It is an acute condition and it can keep re-occurring except the root cause is treated. If this infection is left untreated or not properly treated, it can permanently damage the inner and middle ear.

Signs and Symptoms of an Ear Infection

There are three types of ear infection and this depends on the part of the ear affected. The three main parts of the ear are the outer ear, the middle ear, and the inner ear.

General symptoms of an ear infection are:

  • Ear pain and inflammation
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Meningitis can be a sign of an infection of the middle ear
  • Fluid trapped in the eardrum causing it to bulge
  • A sense of fullness in the ear
  • Fluid drainage from the infected ear
  • Fever
  • Difficulty hearing

Causes of Ear Infection

The causes of ear infection are mostly bacteria and viruses but other things can cause an ear infection and they include:

  • Infected adenoids, these tissues are located near the tonsils and their function is to trap harmful microbes in foods. Swollen or infected adenoids can lead to ear infection.
  • Food allergies
  • Smoking
  • Colds
  • Changes in air pressure
  • Sinus infections
  • Production of excess mucus

Home Remedies for Ear Infections

Breast Milk

This remedy is effective in treating an ear infection in both adults and children. It contains natural antibodies that fight the germs and quicken the healing process. It can treat all types of ear infection and it is very effective that it brings relieve in one or two days.

Add few drops of breast milk into the infected ear or ears using a dropper, do this every hour.

Garlic

Garlic is a natural pain reliever and it also contains antimicrobial compounds. It is an effective treatment for ear aches and infections. Consume three cloves of fresh garlic every day to accelerate the healing process.

Boil few raw cloves of garlic in water for 5 minutes, crush the boiled cloves of garlic and add some salt. Put this mixture inside a clean cloth and place it on the infected ear.

You can also make use of garlic oil. Cook two fresh cloves of garlic in 2 tablespoons of mustard oil or sesame oil until it turns black. Strain the solution when cool and add 4 drops of this oil in the infected ear. Do this three times daily.

Onion Juice

Onion, though a common kitchen ingredient, it is loaded with powerful medicinal properties and its strong antimicrobial and antiseptic properties make it an effective treatment for many types of infections including ear infections.

Chop a small onion and blend it. Extract the juice and store it in a container. Use a dropper to add few drops of this juice into the infected ear daily.

Holy Basil

This is an effective home remedy for earache and ear infection. It reduces the pain and treats the infection because it contains antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.

Crush fresh leaves of holy basil and extract the juice, put this juice on and around the infected ear. Make sure it does not enter into the ear canal.

Holy basil oil can also be used, dilute it with coconut oil and use it to clean inside the ear using a cotton ball soaked in the mixture. Wipe inside the ear, the pinna, the outer edges and the surroundings and behind the ear. Do these twice daily.

Apple Cider Vinegar

This is an effective home therapy for ear infection caused by fungus and other harmful microbes. You can make use of white vinegar if ACV is unavailable.

Mix ACV or white vinegar and clean water in equal proportions, soak a cotton ball in this solution and put it in your ears like a plug. Let it stay for at least 5 minutes before removing it and drain the liquid from the ear. You can use a hair dryer to help.

Mango Leaf Juice

Mango leaf juice is an effective treatment for ear pain and it offers a quick relief from the pain and inflammation. Crush some tender and fresh leaves of mango and extract the juice.

Use a dropper and put five drops in the infected ear to give you quick relief within minutes. Do this three times daily and in a few days, you will be okay.

Tea Tree Essential Oil

This oil contains antimicrobial, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties which help to instantly bring relief from the aches, pains, and inflammation.

Mix a tablespoon of olive oil and a teaspoon of colloidal silver, then add three drops of tea tree oil to this mixture and mix them properly. Add a teaspoon of unfiltered ACV and warm it lightly.

Use a dropper and fill the infected ear with this mixture and let it stay inside the ear for five minutes before draining it out. do this three times every day for two days.

Salt

This is a common and effective home remedy used to relieve ear pain. It relieves pain, inflammation, and swelling and it drains out fluids from the ear.

Heat one cup of salt and tie it in a cloth, you can use a rubber band to tie it or tie a knot. Wait for it to get warm and then you place it on the affected ear for 10 minutes. Do this two times daily and you can use rice in place of salt, it is also very effective.
