    Menstrual pain or cramps are throbbing pains that occur in the lower abdomen; this happens as the muscles of the womb relax and contract to expel the lining of blood.

    Signs and symptoms of menstrual pain are abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, intense pain, restlessness, moodiness, inability to carry out one’s normal activities and some women do faint.

    Effective Home Remedies for Menstrual Cramps

    1. Heat

    Applying heat to your abdomen helps to relax the muscles contracting in your womb; this is the main cause of the pain which is usually caused by hormonal imbalance. This is the easiest way to reduce menstrual pain.

    You can overcome this by placing a heating pad over your abdomen and back (lower back); if you don’t have a heating pad, you can fill a regular bottle with hot water and use it. Apply it to these areas until you feel less pain.

    If you don’t have any of this; you can dip a clean towel in hot water; squeeze it lightly and apply it on your lower back and abdomen until the towel gets cold. Repeat this until the pain is gone.

    Another way to do this is to soak a clean towel in water; squeeze out excess water and place the towel in a microwave for one minute, and then you apply it to your abdomen and lower back.

    You can also have a hot shower; this will relieve the pain and relax the body.

    1. Ginger

    This powerful herb is effective in relieving pain and cramps; it is one of the most common herbs used in treating dysmenorrhea and it has the ability to lower the levels of prostaglandins, the hormone that causes menstrual pain.

    It relieves pain; treats irregular period, prevents pre-menstrual syndrome, and fights the symptoms of menstrual cramps like nausea, vomiting, and tiredness.

    You can chew on a fresh ginger root; you can also take ginger and lemon tea and remember to add ginger generously to your meals.

    To make ginger tea; grate fresh ginger root, as much as you can handle. You can also use ginger powder; boil it in a cup of water and let it cool. Sieve it and add lemon juice before taking it.

    1. Cinnamon

    Though commonly used as a spice; this herb has anti-pain, anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic and anti-clotting properties. It relieves menstrual pain and it is also a good source of magnesium; this mineral relieves cramps and muscle pains.

    Take cinnamon tea three times daily; add a teaspoon of cinnamon powder to a cup of warm water and take it during your period.

    Chamomile tea is an effective home remedy for painful menstruation; it has anti-spasmodic and anti-inflammatory properties. This helps to relax the muscles of the uterus and stop the spasmodic contraction that causes menstrual pain.

    Add a tea bag of chamomile to a cup of hot water and let it steep for ten to fifteen minutes; take out the tea bag, add some lemon juice and honey if you please and take your tea when cold. Do this three times daily.

    1. Papaya

    This is a powerful anti-inflammatory fruit; it is effective in treating menstrual cramps, its rich nutrient content soothes the walls of the uterus and stops the contraction of the muscles.

    Eat lots of papaya and the seeds; you can also take papaya leave tea.

    1. Parsley

     This leave tops the list of home remedies for menstrual pain; this is because it contains two important compounds called Apiol and myristicin.

    These compounds ease menstrual flow, prevent menstrual pain and relieve cramps. It is also an effective remedy for irregular menstruation.

    Boil a cup of water and add fresh parsley leaves to it and let it steep for at least 5 minutes. Strain it and drink the tea. Do this two times daily.

    1. Fennel

    Fennel seeds have phytoestrogenic, anti-spasmodic and anti-inflammatory properties; this help to relax the muscles of the uterus and relieve pain and discomfort.

    Add a teaspoon of fennel seeds to a cup of boiling water, reduce the heat and let it simmer for 5 minutes; strain it and take this tea twice daily.

    Moderate exercises are good for menstrual pains; they release endorphins which calm pains, boost mood and relax the body. A study confirmed that aerobic exercises and stretching help in soothing period pain.

    Don’t overdo it; 10 minutes of moderate exercise is ok to relieve pain, relax your body and induce sleep.

    1. Flaxseeds

    These seeds are great for reducing the intensity of pains and menstrual cramps; they are rich in essential fatty acids regulate the production of the hormone prostaglandins, they also improve the functions of the uterus and they are great in treating fertility problems.

    Take flaxseed tea three times daily during your period; put a teaspoon of ground flaxseed in a cup of hot water and leave it to step for 10 minutes, then add lemon and honey and take your tea when cool.

    1. Massage

    Massaging your abdomen with essential oils can help to relieve menstrual pain; effective oils to use are lavender, marjoram, sage, clary and peppermint essential oils. They reduce pain, the symptoms of menstrual pain and relax the body.
