  • I think it’s  just a subsidiary,  but the parent company is owned by South African billionaire Christo Wiese, but before a large retail company launch in any country, a citizen of that country (Nigeria) must have 50% stake in shoprite just like  Carrefour in Dubai. Carrefour is owned by a french retail giant but when they try to enter Dubai, they came in through Al Futtaim the biggest mall retail shop owner and he has a 50% stake.   They have not publicly told us who has the stake in Nigeria. People are just guessing online…

Yam export  is a great business but the most important issue is the country you are exporting into, they have very strict laws on imports from Africa especially food. You need the proper health papers, the proper labeling and the specific packaging. So, be very careful you can spend a lot of money buying and preparing and by the time the goods arrive their airports or ports they will either ask you to return it or they will destroy it.

My advice to you is to first research the country you want to send the yam,  and digest their municipality laws and import laws, am talking from experience so do some research first, you will also need to go to their embassy to collect their export guideline they will give it to you free, also the first thing I didn’t mention  you need to start from Nigeria export promotion council, they will guide you on packaging, labeling and  more information.

  • That is a very technical machine, meaning it has a lot of moving parts and  process going on, so you have to do some research online to know the specific machine you want.   Some of the machine can do peeling, slicing, drying milling and packaging while some are limited in their functions, that means manual labor will do one or two process and the machine will do the rest.

I think it would be better to import from outside Nigeria, that is if you don’t get a good one in Nigeria, there are two people I know that are into Agricultural machine procurement, I don’t know if they are still in business but you can give them a try.

What is going to be the scale of your production?  that will determine the  type of machine?
